From the Headmaster:

Given our ability to keep functioning for the whole school during the fire of February 1997 it was somewhat ironic that a partial closure was forced on us on Tuesday as a result of lack of water - hardly a scarce commodity in this part of the world. Having had assurances from the Water Board on Monday evening that all would be well overnight, it was disappointing that water supplies in Helensburgh remained unresolved on Tuesday morning. Our storage capacity was insufficient to safely cater for more than two year groups in the St Bride’s building and priority was given to the senior certificate classes due to the critical nature of their career path. The catering staff did a great job in providing soup and sandwiches and, as I write - midway through Tuesday morning - the word from the authorities is that water will be restored late on Tuesday afternoon in time for a normal opening on Wednesday.

I am sorry for any inconvenience caused to parents by the late notification and by the need to respond to the situation as it developed.    I must also apologise if there were parents who were not informed for whatever reason. The notice board on the webpage is clearly a valuable resource in circumstances of this nature and we may also have been able to reach more parents if we had 100 per cent e-mail coverage. I would again urge parents to send us in their details if they have not already done so.

On the evening of Thursday the 13th, Dr Russell, Mrs McKillop and Mrs Wales took a group of S3-S6 pupils to Glasgow's Theatre Royal to see 'West Side Story' .

From the Depute Headmaster:

The S3 and S4 December examinations timetable is now on the school website.   These examinations begin on Tuesday 2nd December.

There will be a Year Group photograph for J1-T2, plus S6, plus Boarders on Friday (21st).

PTA NEWS

Lomond School PTA Coffee Morning: On the first Friday of every month we rendezvous about 10.30 am at the Commodore Hotel to drink coffee, eat huge sticky buns and have a good old blether.  Some call it a coffee morning, but quite honestly it's a laugh and you are made to feel most welcome if you have not been before.   The invitation is open to all parents from Nursery through to S6. Hopeto see you there.

CHRISTMAS SOCIAL - 28th NOVEMBER: Come along and enjoy a wonderful evening of delicious food, excellent home made mulled wine, and even if you don't want to do any Christmas shopping, it will still be a very social event with a great jazz duo playing and, of course, our very own T1/T2 choir singing Christmas carols to get you into the Christmas spirit.

The CD, which was made possible thanks to sponsorship from Argyll & Bute Council and Scottish Arts Council through Awards For All, comprises three of the pieces the orchestra performed at the special celebratory concert in March – Grieg’s “Norwegian Dances”, “Thyme” by local composer Mike Norris, which the orchestra premiered at the concert, and Mozart’s “Concerto for Flute in D Major”, featuring young Lomond School soloist, Helena Gourd. The CD, which is priced £5, is available to buy through the orchestra’s website www.h-o-s.co.uk <http://www.h-o-s.co.uk/> from the end of this month and will also be on sale at the next concert on Saturday 29th November in the Victoria Halls, where once again the orchestra will perform a varied programme of music under the baton of conductor, Robert Baxter. The programme includes The Barber of Seville Overture by Rossini, “Benedictus” by the Scottish composer Alexander Mackenzie and Beethoven’s ever popular 5th Symphony. The featured soloist at this concert is oboist Sarah Cruickshank who will be performing Albinoni’s Oboe Concerto in D Minor, opus 9, no. 2.
