I trust that all pupils and families enjoyed a restful Half Term and are ready to resume the second half of the Autumn Term. This is a very significant term for covering the curriculum and there will be preliminary examinations for S4 which are most important in preparing for public examinations and examinations for S3. The challenges of the weather and darker nights are also with us and all pupils are asked to be especially vigilant on their journeys to and from school with regards to road safety. It is most important that pupils come to school properly dressed too and it is reminded that blazers should be worn to and from school with a waterproof jacket in addition if needs be.
Several trips happened over the Half Term which are noteworthy. The S2 Rugby tour to Newcastle was enjoyed by the boys who attended with 1 win and two losses against some significant local sides such as RGS Newcastle, Dame Allan’s and King’s Tynemouth. The teams played well and thanks are extended to Mr Fitzgerald and Mrl Hammond for leading this mini tour. The S2 Hockey tour also travelled to Newcastle and the team secured an excellent win of 4-0 against King’s School. Our thanks are also given to Mrs Fitzgerald and Miss Gladden for organising and accompanying the Hockey team.
Miss Dudley, Mr Dodson and Mr Bignall took 17 S3 and S4 pupils to Morocco in North Africa on a trekking expedition. They were immediately immersed in a very different culture with all the consequent demands of new foods, languages and a more arid climate. The group did extremely well and following several acclimatisation days and preparatory treks managed a full ascent of Mount Toubkal, which at 4167 metres is North Africa’s highest mountain. The pupils were extremely motivated and showed tremendous grit and determination in their ascent which was testing in all aspects. It was a very safely managed trip and I am most grateful to all the staff involved who enabled a life changing experience to be laid on. Several other schools I have visited recently have been most impressed with the outdoor pursuits programme at Lomond and there is no doubt that it helps develop leadership characteristics very well in our pupils.
Mr Minnis and I were able to visit a very active section of the Lomond Former Pupil community in Hong Kong. These young men and women are very well launched on a variety of careers in finance, architecture, and engineering and are very warm in their memories of Lomond School. The school has had longstanding connections since 1997 with a Chinese school in Guangzhou. Due to changes in staff this link has been less effective in recent years and it is our intention to renew it. There have been many successful GAP year placements of senior pupils who have left to teach English in China for a year before university. The groundwork for a new scheme was laid and this is a tremendous opportunity for our senior pupils as they prepare for their next career and educational steps. Many Lomond FPs have gone on prepared with a far deeper understanding of this very important nation and we look forward to better curriculum links too. Notably a Chinese teacher who taught at Lomond in the late 1990s, Mr Patrick Hu, has now become Assistant Headmaster in a very fast growing Chinese school in Shenzen and we look forward to further contact through him. It is extremely important that our pupils gain an accurate understanding of this region which will be increasingly important in the years ahead. It is also vital that we have a strong international dimension to the school which will help our pupils prepare well for working in international teams and contexts in their careers.
The first half of term has been one of real progress and importantly now the rhythm of effective work must be regained. With Attitudinals delivered home before the Half Term this is an ideal opportunity for any work related concerns to be shared via Form Teachers. Many extra-curricular events will be very active with drama and music being prepared for the end of term. I wish all pupils a solid and secure next half of term and look forward to further progress by Christmas.

It was wonderful to see the big show of support from parents, pupils, members of the Helensburgh community and many friends of the school on Saturday at the Official Opening of the Sports Hall. We were favoured with a fine day which heralded a very enjoyable event. There was a significant turnout with the Sports Hall full to capacity for the event.
It provided the right opportunity to thank the many families and members of the Lomond community who have provided financial support for the kitting out of the Sports Hall. The Lomond School PTA and Lomond School Former Pupils have made possible the installation of the climbing wall and the cricket nets respectively, which are state of the art. There has been widespread involvement recognised by the Make Your Mark bricks in the entrance stairway and we are particularly grateful to the Scott family who have supported the equipping of the Fitness Suite with its beautiful views. Inside is an inscription which reads, ‘With Encouragement, Determination and Self Belief, you will succeed’. This sums up what we aim to do as a shared community at Lomond School.
It was excellent to see the school pipe band play at several points during the afternoon and they were well received. I was very proud of the S6 pupils who gave excellent hospitality and their tours were much appreciated. The junior and senior pupils who were involved with the demonstration activities of climbing, trampolining, cricket, yoga, karate and fitness were also excellent ambassadors for their sport and school. I am very thankful to our school caterers who provided an excellent fare and to the support team who ensured that all ran very smoothly on the day.
We were delighted to have Mr Macdonald return to open the Sports Hall and it was very fitting that he did so given the many years of planning that he and his team put in to bring the project to completion. Mr Macdonald noted in his speech that the new building widened the range of activities that could be tackled and increased the scope for links with local sports clubs and organisations. It was excellent to have representatives from the Helensburgh Rugby, Cricket and Netball clubs, amongst others, who all have weekly slots booked in and where pupils are finding playing and coaching opportunities. We certainly hope to see sport in the Helensburgh area prosper and develop through this excellent new facility.
There was also an opportunity to pay special testimony to Mr Ian McKellar whose retirement at Half Term will leave a great sadness in our community. Mr McKellar has been at the heart of the Sports Hall project and has developed the facilities for the pupils with an eagle eye for detail, liaising closely and daily with contractors and consultants. We are losing a member of staff who is very dear to the hearts of many generations of Lomond pupils and who has taught at the highest level. It is rare to find a man of Mr McKellar’s quality, both in his relationships with others and in his unique skills. Mr McKellar has been involved in running his own family business, has trained and worked as an architect before beginning his teaching career. His teaching has been hugely inspirational and has inspired scores of pupils who have taken Graphic Communications with him. Additionally Mr McKellar has led the way as Master of Works and School Architect in a role that he has made his own. The Senior School building and Burnbrae boarding house both bear testimony to his design skills and reflect his great care. Mere words cannot express our deep debt of gratitude to Mr McKellar and I know that all members of the Lomond community will wish him very well for his retirement and miss him deeply.
I hope that the Half Term holiday is very restful for all pupils and parents. It has been a very active and fruitful first half of term. We wish the S2 rugby and hockey teams well on their mini-tour to King’s School in Tynemouth and very safe travelling to the S3 /S4 pupils and staff who are going on the Morocco expedition.
We wish them both success.

The term is moving rapidly on and we now stand under two weeks away from Half Term. The first two months of the new academic year have nearly passed and it was very helpful to see the Attitudinals for Senior School pupils recently. I would like to commend the strong efforts of the very great majority who have been giving excellent effort in class and in their homework. For a few pupils it has been the chance to review their work rate and approach and Form Teachers are working closely to assist those who need a new focus. There is a valuable chance for T1 parents to meet to discuss progress at the Parents’ Evenings this week. This marks the start of the cycle of parent meetings. If there are any questions that parents do have it is requested that the Form Teacher is approached in the first instance to help resolve any concerns at an early stage.
We will welcome Mr Graham Molloy this week onto the staff as our new Master of Works. Mr Molloy will be picking up the baton from Mr Ian McKellar who has been a tour de force at Lomond for very many years. Mr Molloy has a very hard act to follow and yet comes with excellent experience in facilities management. Mr McKellar is unique in that he is a qualified architect, has run his own business before teaching, has taught at an exemplary level and run a very strong Department within the school, before moving into the Master of Works post which he has made his own. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Mr McKellar and will be celebrating with him his well earned retirement after Half Term.
There was a very busy weekend which saw the Norway/Sweden canoe expedition conduct training in strong weather conditions at Loch Tay. I am grateful to Miss Dudley and Mr Dodson for leading this with our outdoor education partners, Beyond Adventure. In addition, the Former Pupils who left in 1999 met on Saturday afternoon allowing them to see the new Sports Hall. This year group were very warm in their memories of the school and were among the first to use the new school following its rebuild after the fire in 1997.
Amongst these returning Former Pupils (FPs) was Samantha Lamb, who is also coming to speak to the S6 pupils on ‘Modern financial systems – what went wrong’ this Friday. It is excellent to welcome back former pupils to address our most senior pupils on very topical issues and we are grateful for this input. We remain very keen to hear the news of our Former Pupils and to meet again returning FPs. Mr Minnis is a key contact for Lomond Alumni and we do offer a virtual network to assist FPs to stay in touch. There will be a London FP gathering later in the year for those working in the Home Counties.
Congratulations to ........Giles Calder, Douglas Jagger, and Craig Stewart. They have been invited to join the Scottish Rugby Union’s U16 Inter-District Training Squad. The boys have already shown perseverance and determination to achieve this and the training they will receive should allow them to develop their game to a higher level.
