As many parents will be aware, last week marked the national campaign for Anti-Bullying Week in the UK. Lomond staff take this extremely seriously and any sustained unpleasant behaviour will receive attention in order to create a tolerant and bully-free environment. Pupils are aware, and regularly updated, that it is not acceptable to be unpleasant to others within the school, or indeed at home.
The theme this year was on ‘Cyberbullying’. The growth in many types of technology including 3G mobile telephones and the widespread adoption of social networking sites, (such as Facebook, My Space, Bebo and others), has prompted a national rise in this type of bullying using technology. Research is showing this to be a significant issue nationally and it is good that Miss Dudley was able to offer information via a Parents’ Forum meeting the year before last on this topic. We plan to do a repeat of this information for parents, and pupils are regularly updated on the need for vigilance, high standards and good netiquette. This is an issue that we monitor carefully at Lomond.
If any family does experience behaviour that causes them concern it is always right to be in contact with the school at the earliest juncture. This should be through the Form Teacher as the first point of contact. The matter can then be advanced via the relevant Head of Year or Senior Staff as appropriate. Good structures are in place and we will seek to deal with the problem fairly, quickly and effectively to help all involved.
One very important resource to help assist with good pupil relations and achievement is the staff Mentor scheme. Since the recent promotion of Mr Dunlop and Mrs Guy to Heads of S3/4 and S1/2 respectively there have been two Mentor posts to fill. Following interviews last week I am pleased to announce that Miss Trevena and Mr Fitzgerald will be taking on the roles of Mentors from January 2010. They both have strong pastoral skills and will do a terrific job in assisting pupils with their work and social issues.
Last week also saw the S5/6 Parents’ Evening which proved very helpful indeed. There will be a quick succession of Parents’ Evenings for all other senior years in the Spring Term. These are very helpful indeed in checking on progress and ensuring good channels of communication are maintained. The dates for diaries are:-
T2 7 January
S2 12 January
S1 20 January
S4 28 January
S3 3 February
T1 18 February
One event that will be good for families to know of is the switching on of the Helensburgh Christmas lights outside the West Kirk on Sunday 28 November, in the afternoon (activities from 10am – 6pm; lights on at 5pm). Lomond School traditional musicians and pipers have been invited to do sessions and there will be a large number of stalls and seasonal activities. I hope this provides a good end to this week and we wish all involved the best of preparation.
Looking forward Mrs Diane Philips is taking a group of Lomond pupils to sing in the lovely location of Princes Square Shopping Plaza in Glasgow on Sunday 6 December from 3pm-4.30pm. They will be collecting for the Hansel Foundation and we wish them every success.
Congratulations to ....Harry Johnston. He has been the only Scottish participant in his age group in the British mini downhill mountain bike series. So far he has been placed first and second in his races. An excellent achievement.

A few things to consider are that road deaths are the biggest cause of mortality in those between 1 and 15 years of age in Britain. In the last full year of census there were 39,715 accidents involving children on Britain’s roads. Human behavior is the major factor in 95% of these accidents and interestingly the majority happen in daylight and in built-up areas.

High quality pastoral care has always been, and very much remains, at the heart of a Lomond education. In essence this comes down to a good understanding of a pupil’s needs, both social and academic, development of the wider person and strong pupil-teacher relationships. I am very comfortable that these are in place. To further develop them is the challenge and to this end I have amended the pastoral leadership in the Senior School, which will take place from Christmas onwards.
Mrs Guy, currently also Head of History and Modern Studies, has been appointed Head of S1 and S2. These are crucial years as a pupil joins the school to setting good work habits, and ensuring wide involvement in extra-curricular activities. I am delighted at her experience, which is extensive, and she will provide a very sure touch to these two year groups.
Mr Dunlop will be moving from being a Mentor within the school to becoming Head of S3 and S4. These are crucial examination years for Standard Grade and Intermediate 2. As such, pupils must step up and move forward into strong work routines and more intensive and mature styles of study. We also wish to further encourage wide extra-curricular involvement at a time when some pupils are tempted to reduce rather than maintain their commitments.
Mr Dodson, who has been in charge of S6 for several years, has been appointed Head of S5 and S6. This is a natural evolution and will bring further continuity within the two most senior years of the school. He will be focusing further on developing good UCAS preparation, developing leadership skills and encouraging pupils through their most important public examinations.
Mrs Brown will remain in charge of T1 and T2 and hence in each two years of a pupils experience there will be a school leader dedicated to the stage they are at. I hope that all communications will continue to be focused initially through the Form Teacher or Tutor, with more significant concerns then dealt with by these Heads of Year. A further concern can then be dealt with by Miss Dudley as Depute Headteacher or by me as Headmaster. Two new pastoral staff Mentors will be appointed shortly to supplement these pastoral appointments and these will be communicated when decided.
One further very important appointment is Dr MacBeath who will become the Assistant Examinations Officer to assist with internal and public examinations. I am most impressed with Dr MacBeath’s efficiency and surety of touch and I hope he will bring further gains on the academic side of the school.
It was most encouraging to see a good through flow of visiting families at the Open Evening last Wednesday. Many positive letters have been received following this event and I am most grateful to the excellent leadership of the S6 Prefects who gave such good tours. Many families enjoyed meeting them, and could see exactly how their son or daughter would turn out in due course. The S6 are busy making their final applications to universities at the moment and are steadily receiving offers back. We will hear more of their news later in the year.
Non- uniform Day is being held on Friday 13 November. This is always a good fundraiser for charity. Pupils may dress in casual clothes but no slogans, fancy dress, poor taste garments or football strips please. £1 should be paid on the day and will be collected by the S6 Charity Committee.
Lorenzo Chiavarini who was 4th overall in the National Laser Inland Championships at Rutland this weekend -104 radial boats sailed.
Douglas Willoughby and Calum Thornton have been selected to train at the Western Cricket Academy in Glasgow which is run by Cricket Scotland. Douglas will be joining the U14’s squad and Calum joins the U16s.
Nicola Skrastin who was chosen for the West District Under 18 hockey squad.

Morrisons ‘Let’s Grow’ vouchers are being collected by Clarendon again this year so please feel free to hand in any vouchers to the main office or Clarendon. The Nursery is delighted with the watering cans we managed to get them last year. Hopefully this year we will be able to order some goods for Mrs Gardiner and her team who have been working on the pots around Clarendon.

As Halloween recedes from the memory it is good to be reminded about the charitable fundraising that the S6 pupils engaged upon with the associated discos in the Senior School. These raised the excellent sum of £565 which is a real boost to the two school charities that we are focusing upon this year. The S6 Charity Committee organised the events very smoothly, alongside the Clarendon Pumpkin carving which happened at the end of last week. Much fun was had and the sum raised will be very helpful indeed to the charities.
Lomond is endeavouring to support two charities this year. The first is locally based at Balloch in the form of CHAS. Children’s Hospice in Scotland is an organisation that is very dear to the hearts of the pupils and staff. Some senior pupils attend on voluntary service basis and we hope to raise £2000 this year for this excellent local cause.
The second charity is Pecanwood College in South Africa which assists underprivileged youngsters to access a life changing education. The target sum is also £2000 and this will help support an exceptional pupil called Gustav Heckerdot who has lost his parents but is aiming high in his studies. If all goes to plan Gustav will come over for his final two terms to Lomond in the Spring of 2011. This latter link stems from the 2007 Rugby and Hockey Tour to South Africa. There is also a GAP year placement at Pecanwood from January to August. Any S6 Lomond leaver may apply for this scheme which comes highly recommended.
In addition to the events so far there will be a non-uniform day on Friday 13 November. There will be a £1 donation to these two charities in return for wearing casual clothes to school. These should not include offensive slogans and must be practical for the school day. In addition the Carol Service collection will also contribute to these two charities. In this way we hope to make a real difference to the lives of other young people in our area and wider afield.
The Transitus 1 classes have given a terrific showing of ‘Bugsy Malone’ in St Bride’s Hall this week. Much effort has gone in from parents, staff and pupils to produce a very strong production with excellent singing, acting and choreography. Many thanks must go to Dr McGlinchey and Mrs Robertson for helping produce the costumes, and also to Mrs Fullarton and Miss Boyd for directing and producing. It was full of excellent touches of humour and the pupils really acquitted themselves very well indeed.
I thank the S6 pupils in advance for their help at the Open Evening and to all other pupils who are taking part. All parents and families are warmly welcome to visit the school on Wednesday from 7pm to 9pm and we hope that friends and family may all feel welcome too. It is an excellent evening and is an open house to all who would like to see more of the school.
Malcolm Feist - who has passed his lifeguard exams with flying colours scoring 27 out of 30.
Rachel Nimmo who was competing in the LSRA Classic Slalom at Hillend on Sunday where she came 1st in the Junior 2 Girl category.
Well done to both of you.
Rowing...We are keen to get a rowing team up and running in the school. I have had some interest from pupils but still require more. Training will be in evenings after school to be confirmed when numbers are known. If any pupil is interested please meet Mr Fitzgerald at lunchtime on Thursday (1pm) in the Gym.
