From the Headmaster
Many congratulations are due to the team of hill runners who competed in thegruellingScottish Islands Peaks Race 2010 at the weekend. The race, which began in 1983, attracts a large number of adult and youth teams, with the loyalty intense within teams and the competition significant between them. There are 160 nautical miles of sailing to cover with runners covering approximately 60 miles and 11500 feet of ascent.
Led by Mr Butler, who organises the Senior Hill Running Club each week, the team consisted of Matthew Underwood (S5), Niall Hope (S5), Andrew Mortimer (S6) and Chris Chalmers (S6). As a group they are extremely fit and have put in long hours of preparation. The team also crucially included Mr Scott, former parent, whose yacht ‘Snowbird of Rhu’ is the vital vessel for transport around the tough island course.
The route starts in Oban where there is a hill run creating a Le Mans type start as the racers are rowed out to the waiting boats. From there the teams sail to Mull where they run over Ben More, before departing for Jura where they ascend the Paps. The team then moves on to Arran to ascend Goat Fell, before finally finishing at Troon. The race takes two to three days depending on conditions. This year the high temperatures and windless conditions gave almost opposing hazards to the 2009 race, where there were high winds and rainfall. This led to the Youth race being cancelled after Jura due to the light wind conditions. All runners and sailors however competed very well and much to their credit.
The athletics team was also busy with the Senior team winning the three way athletics competition between St Columba’s, Wellington and Lomond schools. Canoeists were out on Loch Lomond and enjoyed the excellent conditions.
During the week The Times covered an article on Britain’s ‘humiliating decline’ in foreign languages. Across Britain, it states, the number of pupils taking a foreign language has dropped by a third since 2004. This was when taking a language to the age of 16 was made voluntary. The number of pupils taking a language at Higher level has dropped by approximately 50 % since the 1970s. In 1976 there were around 11,000 Higher language examinations sat, but in 2006 there were fewer than 6,000.
An All Party Group of MPs has stated that every pupil up to 16 ought, once again, to be involved in learning another language. This is the case at Lomond where all pupils study French to the end of S4 and a significant number also maintain German until S4. The results have been very encouraging with a large number going on to take a language at Higher afterwards. Results have been excellent with all pupils sitting German Higher last year gaining an A grade and all pupils at French and German Intermediate 2 gaining an A, B or C grade.
The long established language exchanges with our partner school in Nürnberg, Germany and our new relationship with a lycée in St Etienne, France are very valued, as is our longstanding link with the pupils who come over annually from Leipzig in Germany. The regular trips to Nice, Normandy, Paris and Nürnberg all help stimulate an understanding and appreciation of other European languages and cultures. We will celebrate the ‘European Day of Languages’ again in the Autumn Term (around 26 September) where the whole school is involved.
It has been excellent to see many Departments involved in academic competitions and specialist days. Pupils of all ages are strongly encouraged to make entries for competitions in areas they are studying and it is always good to hear of successes and involvement whether in or out of school. Recently we have seen successful involvement with the design of a new logo for the Helensburgh and Lomond Carers Project by Alexander Lewis and Lucy Metcalf through the Art Department. We hope to see a group of Young Engineers under the leadership of Dr Tully entering the Royal Navy Engineering Day in mid June. This will build on an earlier Engineering Day with the Smallpeice Trust for S2.
Congratulations to ……………
Our warmest congratulations to each of you.

LOMOND SCHOOL ROWING CLUB
Last Saturday at Castle Semple Rowing Club in Scotland's largest one day regatta held in glorious sunshine at Lochwinnoch, members of the school's rowing club gave creditable performances in what for many was their first experience of competitive rowing. A gusting head wind causing high waves made for very tricky conditions but this did not deter the crews. Tom Claxton and Rebecca Lightfoot in a double scull won the Mixed Restricted 2 event. Tom also came 2nd in the J U15 single scull with Rebecca coming 3rd in the Women's Novice single scull. Annie Carroll was joined by a fellow novice from Loch Lomond Rowing Club in the Women's Novice double scull and together they qualified 3rd in their heat and in a closely fought final came 5th. In this, their first regatta, Oliver Monteith and Ryan Morrison put in a very strong performance against much more experienced crews and came 3rd in the J U12 double scull. The next event will be the Scottish Championships taking place at Strathclyde Park near Motherwell 12th -13th June. This major event held on a world championship standard 2000m course is the main rowing competition of the year for Scottish rowers.

These sessions will be managed by our youth section coaches and are forALL boys and girls from P3 upwards. You will be split into age groups. Perhaps you are a footballer and the season has finished? Or maybe you play hockey and you want to maintain or improve your fitness for next season? Or the cricket season has just started and you're feeling sluggish? Come along AND bring a friend!

PLEASE COME ALONG AND SUPPORT YOUR ASSOCIATION
Last Wednesday saw a new local musical venture initiated by the music department of Lomond School. The plan was to bring together groups of pupils from various primary schools around the Helensburgh and Lomond area and attempt to merge them into tightly organised choirs in a very short period of time. The focus was on musical enjoyment, teamwork and an introduction to choral singing.
|
|
The afternoon saw pupils from Rhu, Kilcreggan, Arrochar, Garelochhead, Colgrain, John Logie Baird and Lomond mix together to make three very different sounds from three distinct genre of music.
All of the children warmed their voices up together under the guidance of Mrs Diane Philips and sang the classic song Tzena, Tzena. Thereafter they broke into three choirs with choir 1 singing the choral classic Sing out the Song under the guidance of Lomond’s Head of Music, Mrs Anne Lyon. Choir 2 were trained by Mr Ian Macdonald and sang the wonderful folk round By the waters of Babylon, made famous on Don McLean’s seminal album American Pie. Choir 3 sang from the shows with Mrs Philips choosing to teach them Consider Yourself from Lionel Bart’s musical Oliver.
Event organiser Gavin Calder was delighted with the sound produced in a short space of time by all three choirs and was very grateful to all of the children who sang with gusto and to the three teachers who prepared them all so expertly.
It was very encouraging to see the strong level of support at the Nursery Family Fun Day on Saturday. With decent weather and a very committed ground force of families and staff the conditions were all set for a very enjoyable day. The Nursery garden has been spruced up beautifully and the close involvement of parents, children and nursery staff was very good to see. Thank you to all who came along to participate and we look forward to a repeat next year.
www.helensburghandlomondgames.co.uk as well as the Pipe Band continuing to practise for the competitions which will be held at the Games. It will be another busy June weekend with Scottish Schools Athletics, Cricket fixtures and training for the Norway/Sweden canoe expedition. It is the sign of an involved school community and I am delighted at this as we approach the midpoint of the Summer Term.
Congratulations to ……………

NEWSLETTER
Wednesday 12 May 2010
From the Headmaster
The weekend was very busy with a very good array of different activities that reflect the opportunities of the Summer Term. It was excellent to see the T1-S1 Choir singing alongside the Dorian Choir at the ‘Sing for Spring’ Concert in the Victoria Halls on Saturday evening and they performed very well indeed. It was a real tribute to their commitment to practise and rehearse in the preceding weeks and they blossomed with the encouragement and direction from Mrs Philips. Both were much appreciated and led to many positive comments from the audience and other musicians.
A large number of pupils were out with Athletics and Cricket fixtures in Glasgow on the Saturday and also during the week. Successes were recorded by the Junior Cricket team against Wellington School and in the Scottish Cup against Airdrie Academy, whilst the girls Athletics team enjoyed a win at Craigholme. Monday saw Lomond hosting the Helensburgh Primary Schools Athletics Competition and there was a very good spirit of friendly competition between all the schools who took part. The T2-S1 Great Glen Cycle trip was a great success and had excellent weather for its completion, whilst the canoeists on Saturday enjoyed Loch Lomond at its best.
Two projects that came to fruition formally were the Aquabox fundraising and the Young Enterprise Scheme 2010. Four Aquaboxes have now been filled and sent off for use in relief work. Thank you to all families for all the very helpful and valuable contributions that were sent last term to fill these Aquaboxes which provide immediate help to those in need and then ongoing water purification for a family thereafter. The Young Enterprise Scheme was concluded with donations to both CHAS and Pecanwood College following a profitable 2010 trading session. Amongst the activities undertaken by the S6 entrepreneurs were pumpkin carving, several charity discos, sale of candles and tea towels. These commercial experiences are very helpful to those involved and raise good funds for the charities concerned. We are very grateful to Mr Stewart Noble who acted as Business Advisor to the Young Enterprise team so well.
There are several trips out this week with the J5 travelling (suitably) by rail to York where they have a packed programme and also the T1 pupils who travel to Newlands for their Adventure Training and Outdoor Education week. Both lend so much to the additional experiences for each year group and we hope they will be both safe and very enjoyable in all respects. I am very grateful to the staff involved who have spent much time in planning. The Nursery are out to Kelburn Country Park mid-week and then have a Family Day on Saturday to which all involved with the Nursery are most welcome.
Exams continue apace for all pupils in S4 to S6 and those in S1 to S3 have internal examinations starting next week. I encourage all involved to keep up the hard work and make the use of the time effectively. All staff remain available to assist with any areas of the course that remain challenging. With good preparation and revision we look forward to the results in due course.
Congratulations to ……………

From the Headmaster
As the public examinations start in earnest it is helpful to think beyond them to the next stage of Higher Education. Competition for university places nationally remains tough and good academic results are vital in obtaining a place at the chosen university for pupils. The statistics for obtaining a place to read Art this year exemplify the odds. It was recently revealed that 3000 candidates are whittled down to 300 places for interview and ultimately to under 30 places at university for this course. Against this background it is fantastic to note that all three Lomond Art applicants have received places at their chosen universities this year. We congratulate Reg MacDonald, Tom Cameron and Candice Crossan for their very fine work and performance and being one in a hundred pupils.
Of additional, and increasing, importance to university Admissions Departments are the wider qualities, skills and experiences that pupils are able to demonstrate to add to their public examination results. These play a very important role in demonstrating candidates with real breadth and skills of time management, drive and self motivation. Universities very much want candidates who are mature and display these characteristics as they reduce student drop out and increase high quality graduates who find good employment at the end of their degree course. We strongly advise all our pupils to maintain a diverse and active involvement in as many areas as possible throughout their school careers be this music, art, drama, sport, or adventure training.
Lomond has a strong track record in helping deliver exactly these wider experiences, skills and characteristics. There are many elements that make up this myriad mix, but one that has been very strong over many years has been the adventure training and outdoor activities that have been offered. T2 and S1 pupils will be heading off on the Great Glen Cycle trip this week and we wish them safe travel and good weather, whilst J5 pupils are moving on with their rock climbing at the Sports Hall.
The canoe trip to Norway and Sweden is gathering pace as training continues before the departure in July. There is an additional set of Saturday morning canoe sessions for senior pupils who would like to be involved this term. Pupils who have represented a team are given first priority as they were not able to attend sessions in the autumn, and there is no cost for these sessions. Following this they are open to any senior pupil. A letter will be sent out through the email system with this Newsletter to give further details.
Also much encouraged is the Lomond Challenge which is on the first Saturday back after the Summer holiday. The entries for this event may be made by any pupil pair in S3 to S5 on www.entrycentral.comand these should be made as soon as possible as the site is open to all secondary school pupils in Scotland for this event. As the organising school we would very much benefit from, and like to have, a good compliment of home pairs to compete. The event is an ideal start to the Autumn Term and gives a good focus for fitness training over the summer holidays.
I encourage all pupils to try new activities this term and push on with existing ones. Those pupils who are working on their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award should keep progress going on all four sections as this is exactly what will register with employers and selectors in the years ahead.
The T1 to S1 choir continue to prepare for a performance on Saturday 8 May at the Victoria Halls where they will be performing alongside the Dorian Choir. The concert is entitled ‘Sing for Spring’. The two choirs are performing an entirely new piece of music that has been commissioned by the BBC to celebrate the longevity of the Dorian Choir. All families will be very welcome to see this event which should be most enjoyable.

SQA Examinations
S5 & S6 Study Leave begins on Monday 10 May.
Teachers are available in school for exam pupils throughout study leave for extra support with revision. If coming into school, pupils should wear school uniform and must sign in and out.
S4/S5/S6 Return of textbooks. Every year there is a significant number of textbooks which are not returned. We ask pupils to bring in their subject textbooks on the day of the relevant exam and leave on the table at the front of the Conference Room. Names should be written on the inside front cover so departments know who has returned books. Individuals will be charged for books which are not returned.
Prizewinners in S4-S6. Letters will shortly be sent out to pupils who have won prizes in S4-S6, giving instructions on how to select a prize from W H Smith. Prizes should be selected by 21 May. Prizewinners in S1-S3 will be informed later in the term.
