Curriculum / Exam System

Generally, we follow the guidelines laid down by the national authorities, but adapt them to meet our particular circumstances.

In S1 and S2 pupils follow a common course of English, Mathematics, French, Science (in S2 the three separate sciences of Biology, Chemistry and Physics), History, Geography, Art, Music, Physical Education, Computing, Religious Education, Drama and Health Education. Pupils are also allowed to take German as a second modern language, if they have the requisite linguistic ability.

In S3 and S4, pupils follow a two-year course which leads to national examinations, either Standard Grades or Intermediates, in up to 8 subjects. Currently, English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Music and Physics follow Standard Grade courses, where pupils are entered for two adjacent levels (either Foundation and General or General and Credit). In all other examinable subjects the examination currently taken is Intermediate 2, with Intermediate 1 being available in some cases for pupils who are finding Intermediate 2 too difficult.

These examinable subjects are Biology, French, German, Art, Graphic Communication, History, Geography, Computing, and Business Management. Physical and Religious Education, Health Education and Citizenship are offered as non-examinable courses. GCSE Latin is available in S4 on a distance-learning basis, to those who have the requisite linguistic ability.

In S5, pupils follow up to five courses, leading to Scottish Highers. In addition to the subjects available in S3 and S4, modern studies is available as an ab initio Higher. Physical and Religious Education, General Education and Art and Architecture appreciation are available as non-examinable courses.

In S6, pupils have an individualised timetable, which will normally include a mixture of Scottish Highers and Advanced Highers, and GCE 'A' Levels. Higher Physical Education is also currently offered to S6 pupils. In addition, GCSE psychology and Spanish are available on a distance-learning basis.
