Pastoral Care
The responsibility for Pastoral Care in S1-S2 is managed by the two Assistant Headteachers. Miss Dudley is responsible for girls’ pastoral care and Mr Minnis for boys. Together with the Mentors, Mr Fitzgerald and Mrs Guy, they monitor the personal, social and academic welfare of pupils in the first two years of the senior school. The Mentors offer one-on-one pastoral support both on an appointment and “drop-in” basis. They work in conjunction with Form Tutors who see form classes on a daily basis, and who deliver PSD classes on Friday mornings. The Assistant Heads and the Mentors provide support in the form of target setting for pupils who require additional help in organising their study. Additional support is provided by the School Nurse, Mrs Serpell, who sees pupils both on a referral and a “drop-in” basis. A recent addition to the pastoral care programme is a Peer Support Scheme run by S6 pupils. These pupils who have been trained by Childline offer an alternative route to support for youngsters in the secondary school.
Miss Dudley is also responsible for the pastoral care of girls in S3-S6. The Depute Headmaster Mr Mackenzie is responsible for older boys. Again their work is supported by the Mentors and the School Nurse where appropriate and the Peer Support Scheme offers an alternative level of pastoral care. In S5 and S6 the Form Tutors assume a significant level of pastoral responsibility, conducting pastoral interviews and offering advice geared to coping with examination issues and university entrance. All secondary pupils are interviewed by their form teachers annually.
