A hundred years at St Bride's
This hard-back book of nearly 200 pages charts the history of St. Bride's and Lomond Schools from their origins as Helensburgh High School in Charlotte Street in 1895. Containing over a hundred photographs, including a large Larchfield section, the book describes the move to the present site in 1902; Miss Renton's 34 years of headship; the expansion in boarding due to World War One, and the consequent acquisition of numerous boarding properties, including Ashmount, Burnbrae and Lansdowne Park; World War Two and the bombing of Greenock when the girls saw the Clyde "on fire"; the end of St. Bride's in 1977 as it merged with Larchfield to form Lomond School; the 1997 fire (with many dramatic photographs of the aftermath), and the development of the new school and boarding-house.
The book, which is also a social history of Helensburgh, has been written by Dr. Everett, who has been Head of English at Lomond for over 18 years, and is now available for purchase.
